Urijah Christopher Faber was born on May 14th of 1979 in Isla Vista, California. His family has Dutch, Italian, English, and Irish heritage.
Raised alongside two siblings, Urijah attended the University of California after graduating from high school.
During his college years, he qualified for the NCAA tournament twice. He eventually graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in human development.
Career Highlights
After honing his wrestling skills, Faber underwent training under Fábio “Pateta” Prado, achieving a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
He embarked on his MMA journey in the Gladiator Challenge promotion, clinching victory over his debut opponent with a guillotine choke in 2003.
Despite initial triumphs, he faced his first setback in 2005 against Tyson Griffin. However, he concluded his time at Gladiator Challenge with additional wins before transitioning to World Extreme Cage fighting (WEC).
In 2006, Faber secured his first WEC fight, defeating Cole Escovedo to claim the WEC Featherweight Championship.
He later returned to Gladiator Challenge in the same year, reclaiming the Bantamweight Championship by defeating Naoya Uematsu.
Remarkably, Faber held three titles simultaneously, including one with King of the Cage. The following year, he successfully defended his WEC Championship against Joe Pearson and handed Dominick Cruz a rare defeat.
Despite facing challenges, such as struggling against Pulver before securing victory via unanimous decision, Faber’s momentum slowed when he lost his title to Mike Brown in 2008.
Although he avenged his defeat against Jens Pulver in 2009, he faced another loss to Brown the same year, enduring injuries during the bout.
Faber’s UFC debut against Eddie Wineland, a former WEC Bantamweight champion, ended in victory via unanimous decision.
